Week 38


Welcome to week thirty-seven! This week’s theme is: Beginnings and Endings

Announcements: 

Last Day of School: The last day of school is this Friday, May 24th.  School will release at 10:00 am.  We will spend the day celebrating what we have learned and the friendships we have made this year.  Students will be receiving certificates and an end of the year present from me!  If you would like to send refreshments for our class on Friday feel free to do so. All refreshments need to be wheat and gluten free and as sugar free as possible due to special dietary needs in our class.  Fruit meets both of these requirements and is always popular with our class!

Summer Activities Tab:  Please check out the new Summer Activities tab on our blog.  I have listed some fun learning activities that you can complete with your students over the summer to help them stay prepared for third grade.  The page is still a work in progress, I will be adding more activities over the last week of school.

DIBLES Reading Testing: Expect DIBLES scores to come home with your student this week.  

Take Home Reading Book Bags: Please return your child’s take home reading bag to school once you have finished reading their last book.  We need to have all bags returned by the end of the year. I will be sending emails to those students that still need to return their bags in the coming week.

Library Books: Please ensure that your students return their library books to school before the end of the year.

Spelling Words: There will be no spelling this week.

What we will be learning this week:

We will spend the week reviewing what we have learned this year with fun games and activities.  We will also spend time getting our assignments and other work ready to take home.

Week 37


Welcome to week thirty-seven! This week’s theme is: Somewhere Over the Rainbow!

Announcements: 

Last Day of School: The last day of school is Friday, May 24th.  School will release at 10:00 am.

DIBLES Reading Testing: We are finishing our end of the year DIBLES tests this week.  These tests are required by the state of Utah.  It is important that your child is at school so they can complete this test.  The DIBLES test is administered to each child one at a time.  They read three stories for 1 min each.  They then tell the teacher what they remember about each story.  I will send home your child’s scores as soon as testing is completed.


Take Home Reading Book Bags: Please return your child’s take home reading bag to school once you have finished reading their last book.  We need to have all bags returned by the end of the year. I will be sending emails to those students that still need to return their bags in the coming week.

Library Books: Please ensure that your students return their library books to school before the end of the year.

Walkathon: Our class had lots of fun at the walkathon on Friday!  We raised over 800 dollars for our school.  We have earned a banana split party for working so hard.  Great job second grade!

Here is a look at what we are learning this week:

Art: Students will continue working on their student directed art projects using mediums such as collage, pastels, paper construction, and water color. We are working together as a class to earn a clay day for cleaning quickly.

ASL:  This week we will learn how to sign the shapes in ASL.

Dance:  Students will continue studying the different types of movement. 

Health: Safety

Math: We will study partitioning rectangles and review topics we have covered earlier in the year.  

Music: In music we will be learning about rhythm.

PE: Various games outside and in the gym.  

Reading: In reading we will be having guided reading with our leveled books, phonics lessons and fluency practice.

Science: Students will continue to study weather.

Social Studies: Students will continue to study regions of the United States.

Spanish: No Spanish this week, we will focus on ASL.

Writing:
·                    Composition: We will keep working on the chapter books we have been writing.  Student must have their first chapter book finished by this Friday.

·        Spelling:  The list of words we are learning this week focuses on words with “ow” making the long o sound as in the word “slow.”

Week 36


Welcome to week thirty-six! This week’s theme is: Utah History Week!

Announcements: 

DIBLES Reading Testing: We are taking our end of the year DIBLES tests this week and next week.  These tests are required by the state of Utah.  It is important that your child is at school so they can complete this test.  The DIBLES test is administered to each child one at a time.  They read three stories for 1 min each.  They then tell the teacher what they remember about each story.  I will send home your child’s scores as soon as testing is complete.

Walkathon: Our school is having a walkathon!  The walkathon will take place on the trail at Manilla pond on May 10th from 1:30 until the end of the school day.  Each student was sent home with an envelope for donations today.  We welcome donations of any size from family, friends and neighbors.  Students who do not wish to collect any donations are still welcome to participate in the walkathon with us. 
On May 10th please remind your student to wear comfortable shoes, sun screen and to bring a water bottle.  Parents are welcome to join us for the walkathon!
Please return any money your student may have collected for the walkathon to the school as soon as possible.

May 24th Early Release:  The last day of school is May 24th. School will be released at 10:00 on that day.  Please plan accordingly.

Week 35


Welcome to week thirty-five! This week’s theme is: Backwards Week!

Announcements: 

Parent Teacher Conferences:  Parent teacher conferences were last week.  If you were unable to attend and would like to meet with me please send me an email to make an appointment.

Take Home Reading Book Bags: Our take home reading book bags will be sent home for the last time on April 30th .  After you and your child have read the book that is sent home on April 30th please return your student’s book bag to school so the teachers have time to inventory the books.  There is a fee of $5 for books and book bags that are not returned.

Week 34


Welcome to week thirty-four! This week’s theme is: Green Week.

Announcements: 

Parent Teacher Conferences:  Parent teacher conferences are this Thursday, April 25th.   School will end at 1:00 on this day.  Please sign up for an appointment to meet with me on your Compass account.  If you have any questions regarding the changes coming to our school next year I would be happy to try and answer them at this time.

Book Orders: Scholastic Book Order Flyers have been sent home.  This is our last book order of the school year!  Now is a great time to order books for summer reading. If you wish to order a book please place your order online or return your order form to me by Monday, April 29th.

Field Trip: Our next field trip will take place on April, 29th from 1:30 to 2:15.  We will be walking down to the pond during our Science time.  We will be reviewing what we have learned about habitats and rocks.  Students may bring a small snack if they like.  We would like to have 5 parent volunteers for this trip.  If you are available to go on this trip with us, please email me.

PE: In P.E. we will be running laps for the Quail Run Race Across Utah.  The first class to run enough laps to “run” across Utah will earn a smoothie party.  The second graders are really excited for this chance to get healthy!

Reading: In reading we will be having guided reading with our leveled books, phonics lessons and fluency practice.

Science: Students will continue to study weather.

Social Studies: Students will study ancient cultures.

Spanish: We will be learning the names of the shapes in Spanish.

Writing:
